My wife wanted to hang her indeterminate tomato and cucumber vines from strings instead of a traditional wire or wood trellis. We have our plants near the fence line, so I figured “why not hang strings off our fence?”
Our fence posts are anywhere from 13mm to 14mm deep, so I aimed for somewhere in the middle. The countersunk hole allows for a screw to keep it fastened in windy weather.
So far, the hangers have proven strong and sturdy. We're confident it can handle the weight of our tomato vines during peak production, but if I find otherwise I'll come back and revise the design.
UPDATE: They've lasted all year, and are still going strong! They have held 7-foot tall vines full of cherry tomatoes without any issues!
I recommend PETG or ABS and at least 4 perimeters.
