This is the first part of the Harry Potter Spell Casting Spatula Set series.

Overview

Inspired by the Le Creuset HARRY POTTER™ Spellcasting Spatulas set (sadly no longer available for purchase) the Elder Wand Spatula brings magic back into the kitchen.

It is designed to fit the KitchenAid Universal Bamboo Handle Mixer Spatula.

The spatula handle is based on the incredible model The Elder Wand from Harry Potter by Jason Foss and reworked to fit the use. The spatula end was designed in OnShape and is included as its own piece for quick and easy remixing.

I printed this using Inland Wood PLA which is a wood-like filament but doesn't have any physical pieces of wood. (I would love to print with a better wood filament—like colorfabb Timberfill—but I haven't gotten around to this yet.)

The "Filatech Wood - PLA" profile worked well for me and I used the .02mm SPEED print setting which helped avoid any clogs. To help reduce stringing, print the top and bottom pieces separately in a vertical orientation.

In order to give this some heft (and because my print bed would not fit the entire wand in a single piece) the split model has a stiffener slot for for a 3/16" round rod to be inserted during assembly.

Warning: blades, cut metal, and files can be dangerous if used improperly. Take care while using these tools

  1. Once the pieces are printed, check that the top and bottom parts fit tightly together. You might need to take a sharp blade to remove any filament strings that are in the way.

  2. Cut a 260mm length from the zinc-plated round rod using a pair of bolt cutters. Then file down the sharp edges using a metal rasp. Test that the stiffener rod fits inside the two parts and they fit with no gap.

  3. Mix glue and apply to the inside of stiffener rod holes and to the adjoining surfaces, and use a clamp or rubber band to apply a slight pressure until the glue sets.

  4. After the glue has set, clean up any excess with a sharp blade and then smooth out imperfections using assorted grit sandpaper.

  5. Apply stain and let it dry completely, then coat with a food safe epoxy. (The Inland Wood did not absorb stain well and required a drying time of ~24 hours)
