A fully parametric, user-customizeable louvred vent to keep you cool (and well ventilated)!

Most design parameters are fully user customizable using the OpenSCAD customizer (Window > Customizer). Almost any design parameter including the size, thickness, and mounting holes can be customized using the GUI in either tool.

About

I needed this for a portable air conditioner currently installed in a window that is frequently subjected to harsh driving rains that cause rainwater to get inside. The angled louvres on this vent help prevent the rainwater from getting indoors, but are also useful in blocking light. This vent has a lot of use cases in a variety of ventilation applications and can be easily customized to suit your needs.

Customization

I have designed the OpenSCAD script to make the math required to mark out the required cuts and drills on whatever material you decide to install this vent in as easy as possible. The width and height parameters control the overall width and height of the vent, including the outer bezel. The vent inset sets the distance from each outer edge of the bezel to the outside of the box section containing the louvers. For example, if you have a 100x100mm bezel and set VENT_INSET to 10, the box section will be 80x80mm. This means you will need an 80x80mm square hole in your chosen material to accommodate the vent. Once you have a correctly sized hole for the vent, you can temporarily install it and use the vent itself as a template to drill the holes for the mounting screws.

For the mounting hole spacing, I recommend making the bezel slightly larger than the head of the fasteners you intend to use and insetting the mounting holes at least far enough that the heads of the fasteners do not extend beyond the edge of the bezel. To do this, you can use the following two formulas:

DRILL_SPACING_X = (WIDTH - 2* VENT_INSET) - FASTENER_DIAMETERDRILL_SPACING_Y = (HEIGHT - 2* VENT_INSET) - FASTENER_DIAMETERWhere FASTENER_DIAMETER is the diameter of the head of your chosen fastener. If you wish to use a washer, use the diameter of the washer instead of FASTENER_DIAMETER.
