You've probably seen coasters like these on a bunch of different sites, but most of them only share the G-code. That’s because part of the design is actually done in the slicer.

If you want to make your own coasters, just follow these steps:

1. Create a cylinder with the coaster's dimensions. You’ve got three ways to do this:

  • Directly in your slicer.
  • Use any 3D design software you’re comfortable with.
  • If 3D design isn’t your thing, you can use the Fusion file I’ve shared here. Go to Modify > Change Parameters and set the values for “THICKNESS” and “DIAMETER” as needed. I have mine set to 80mm and 3mm — if those work for you, you don’t need to change anything.

2. (Optional) Add a shape or image to your design:

  • From your design software: import an image (I recommend using an SVG). In Fusion 360, you can do a thin extrusion and set the thickness you want.
  • From the slicer: you can use negative shapes to cut out the design. It’s a bit trickier and you'll need an STL or 3MF file with the shape you want to remove.

3. Open the file in your slicer.

Check out one of the images I uploaded if you need a visual reference. Then go to:

Print Settings > Top and Bottom Layers:

  • Set Top Layers to 0.
  • Set Bottom Layers to either 0, 2, or leave it as is. Here’s the idea:
    • Use 0 if you want the coaster to be see-through.
    • Use 2 (or keep the default) if you want it to hold liquids or have a solid bottom.

4. Go to Infill Settings:

Choose a pattern you like under “Infill” or “Light Infill.” Hexagonal works great, but feel free to try others — just make sure the lines cross each other, or it won’t look as cool.

5. (Optional) Add a color change:

This makes the coasters look extra nice with two colors. In Orca Slicer, after slicing, use the layer slider on the right to select the layer you want. Click the (+) icon to add a color change or a pause to swap filament.

6. Print it out — and don’t forget to share your creation here so we can see it!

If any part of the process isn’t clear, just let me know and I’ll try to help you out!
