I wanted something to house a CO2 sensor (hence the hole for a cable at the rear of the base) and thought a Dalek would be fun. I'm new to 3D printing and 3D modelling so I'm sure there's plenty that could be improved. I modelled at life-size (with some liberties taken to accommodate printing) then scaled to 10% for printing. I printed entirely in PLA in sections which sit together with some wiggle room, you'll need to experiment if you want a snug fit:
- Dome - dead easy, supports easy to remove. Make sure it sits flat, the right way up, on the bed before slicing (enable supports) - I've obviously messed up whichever plane I should've started on in my model ;-)
- Neck - supports took me ages to remove. Could likely have got away with fewer...
- Shoulders - this took the most modelling effort but printed pretty easily with minimal post-processing, I painted supports under the gun/arm box otherwise used none. Print upside down.
- Base - easy, minimal supports that are easy enough to remove, I used 100% infill for a bit of weight. I had to sand the hole to allow the shoulders to fit but I've adjusted the model so that shouldn't be required.
- Eye & Arm - neither printed perfectly, the ball ends were a little misshapen but I roll with it and call it battle damage ;-) I feel the stuck-on googly eye adds a touch of Dr Who style humour.
- Weapon - I printed without the rods, then printed the eight rods independently and superglued them on to the main rod and glued the whole assembly to the gun box. It's the least satisfactory part of the build IMHO but only someone with very keen eyes will spot problems. I've included files for separate printing and printing together (perhaps a resin printer would work fine?).
Ideally the eye, arm and weapon would all be movable (up, down, left, right, arm telescopes) but at this scale that's either hard (to get tolerances correct for up, down, left, right) and infeasible for telescoping so they're simply superglued to the dome & arm box.
Overall I'm very happy with how it's turned out and that just wouldn't have been possible without the plans I found at projectdalek.com - epic job from John Darley, Malcolm Lear, Tony Spalding, Simon Ayers, Christopher Smith, Jonathan Wrigley, Aaron J. Climas, & Mark Smith.
