This grappling hook breaks down flat into two pieces held together with an unusual top mounted nut. Branch stuck up on your roof? Boat floating away? Cooler just out of reach? Be prepared.

Not for climbing or any serious use. This is a toy.

Usage note - the vertical and horizontal parts need to be connected in the correct orientation for the threads on top to line up correctly. If you can't screw the cap on then just pull the smaller set of hooks out and flip it around. I'd recommend marking them with a magic marker when you get them aligned correctly.

Printing tips:

  • The cap should be printed about 101-103% size to properly fit the threads on the main body.
    • Scale the cap only in the X & Y axis (facing up or down) to maintain the correct thread spacing.
  • You only need to print the cap and one of the following sets of parts:
    • Grapple-Horizontal + Grapple-Vertical
    • Grapple-DovetailHorizontal + Grapple-DovetailVertical
  • The dovetail version is recommended to keep it from flexing too much under load, but you can use the version without them if you have problems with supports.
  • Supports should only be needed for the dovetail joints themselves.
  • If you want it to hold a reasonable amount of weight, use a high infill value and increase the perimeter and layer count.
    • Do NOT use this to support anything where safety may be a factor.

Materials:

  • Avoid brittle filaments like PLA or PC, this will flex under load and may risk shattering.
  • I have had good results with PETG-CF, PETG, and TPU 68D. TPU 90/95A is a bit floppy and difficult to thread the cap on.
