A very nice visual and intuitive proof of the pythagorean theorem.

I don't know who originally uploaded the model, but I found the model below, and although beautiful, I had a few problems with it, most notably:

  • The print-in-place margins are too large, so the chain becomes wobbly.

  • The model is too small to demonstrate in class.

  • The Tinkercad model is crude. I like round circles.

  • It is VERY fragile because of the printed axles that can only be printed vertically.

I did a complete redesign in FreeCAD, solving all the above problems. The model is now twice as big in the x and y dimensions. I added a very thin lid to stabilize the axles. The circles are much rounder. The chain has much tighter tolerances, so it is much less stretchy.

I added very small fillets to most of the sharp corners, to make it less prone to warping, and make it more printer friendly in general.

Printing Instructions

I recommend using a draft shield when printing the base for improved thermals. If this doesn't work, you could try mouse ears.
For the chain, I use a raft. It should also be printed with supports.
The rest can be printed with standard profiles. Every model is in the recommended print orientation.

Remixing or Printing with Logo

I uploaded my FreeCAD file for easy remixing. Also, I printed my school's logo on the square piece. My method:

  • Prepare an SVG without crossing perimeters. Use few colors; I simplified to 3 colors. I exported an SVG for each color.

  • Import the SVG. Choose SVG as geometry.

  • In the Draft workbench, select all parts, then choose "Draft to Sketch" in the modification menu.

  • Delete the original parts.

  • Add the sketch to a new body. In the body's properties, set "Allow Compound" to true.

  • Extrude the sketch. I found 0.2 mm to have excellent color opacity, but it might be different with different filaments.

  • Repeat for each separate color, making each 0.2 mm thicker.

  • Finish the model, export, and import into PrusaSlicer.

  • PrusaSlicer will probably recognize the logo and ask to do automatic color changes.

  • I do ironing on the logo. A badly tuned ironing mode can make your print worse instead of better, so just try it out and then hope and learn! :)
