This is a spool for filament samples that are too large to print out of just loose coil, but too small to warrant a fully-sized or even quarter-sized spool. The spool is made of segments, so you can stack as many of them as you need.
You may want to consider printing the spool with something more heat-resistant (e.g. PETG), since drying the samples is a handy option.
This is a reimplementation of another model (https://www.printables.com/model/127251-expandable-loose-filament-spool-with-holes-for-ska). I found the idea to be a great match for my setup, but I disliked some aspects of it (very delicate design, no features to hold the pieces together, the spacer rotates freely).
My design still has some room for improvement, most notably the drum core's diameter is almost too small and the springiness of PETG makes it want to unwind, and I would like more solid detention features, but this is what I have printed and I know that it works.
Edit 2025/12/02: As it turns out, 70mm drum core in fact is too small. PLA winded on such a small diameter after a few weeks becomes easy to snap during print, because it develops small fractures on the outer side. 90mm drum core shows no such problems.
Because of how narrow the segments are, I needed a specially designed clip and label: https://www.printables.com/model/1409666-filament-clip-for-narrow-spaces and https://www.printables.com/model/1409673-filament-tag-for-narrow-spaces.
