I really liked the "Solder Station Brass Wool Holder" by Spock, but the scrap metal I wanted to use as weights for the base didn't fit into the provided cutout. I therefore modified the base, hollowing it out to offer lots of additional space for weights. To keep the weights in place, I also designed a cap that can be glued onto the base. To keep the weights from rattling, I just filled up the base with some silicone sealant also gluing down the lid this way.

Additionally, I also added three cutouts to the bottom surface of the base designed to mount 8 mm self-adhesive rubber feet. This way the brass wool holder sits rock solid on my table without sliding around.

Version v2

When printing another brass wool holder, I realized that the outer cap diameter was just slightly too large, which led to it being caught in the thread when screwing in or unscrewing the base. So I updated the base cap model and reduced its outer diameter. I highly recommend printing this updated version of the base cap.

Print Instructions

For some reason, this base does not screw into the top part of the original model by Spock if you choose to print the STL-file he provided for the top part. You either need to print the top part from the STEP-file Spock provided in his original model or you print the files I provided for the top part.

  • Printed in PLA, but any rigid filament should do

  • 0.12 mm layer height

  • 2 wall loops

  • 15% gyroid infill

  • No supports needed
