Splunk Edge Hub Battery Cooled Case

A purpose-built enclosure designed to house the Splunk Edge Hub with integrated active cooling and portable battery power. This case provides thermal management and remote power for reliable edge data collection and processing.

Design Intent

This case addresses the thermal challenges of continuous Edge Hub operation while providing battery backup for uninterrupted data collection. The dual-fan cooling system ensures optimal operating temperatures, while the integrated battery pack maintains operation during power interruptions—critical for edge computing deployments.

Features

  • Active Cooling System - Dual 60mm fans provide continuous airflow across the Edge Hub
  • Battery Backup Integration - Dedicated mounting for portable battery pack ensures uninterrupted operation
  • Thermal Management - Strategic airflow design prevents thermal throttling during heavy processing
  • Cable Management - Organized routing for power and data cables with rear cable output
  • Modular Power Options - Flexible USB power board mounting for custom power configurations
  • Vibration Dampening - Rubber gasket mounting reduces fan vibration transmission
  • Tool-Free Battery Access - Easy battery swap

Use Cases

  • Remote site monitoring with unreliable power
  • Industrial edge computing deployments
  • Branch office data collection points
  • IoT gateway installations
  • Critical infrastructure monitoring
  • Temporary deployment scenarios

Included Files

  • Box - Bottom
  • Box - Lid
  • Box - Latch (need 2)
  • Shelf
  • Seal - print in TPU, optional

Required Components

  • Splunk Edge Hub
  • 1x Krisdonia 50000mAh Laptop Power Bank
  • 2x 12V 60mm x 15mm fans
  • USB-C Power Module
  • Rubber tape/foam gasket material
  • USB cables for power connections

Print Settings

  • Layer Height: 0.2mm
  • Infill: 30-40% (higher for structural rigidity)

  • Print Orientation: Main chassis flat, minimize support material

Assembly Instructions

Pre-Assembly Preparation

  1. Print all components and remove supports
  2. Test fit all components before final assembly
  3. Cut rubber tape to size for Edge Hub gasket

Installation Steps

Pre-Assembly Preparation

  1. Print all components and remove supports
  2. Test fit all components before final assembly
  3. Cut rubber tape/foam gasket to size
  4. Wire fans to USB boost converter board

Assembly Order (Bottom to Top)

Battery Installation

  • Place battery pack in the bottom of the main chassis
  • Ensure battery sits flat and stable

Fan Shelf Setup

  • Mount both 60mm fans to the shelf/fan plate
  • Ensure consistent airflow direction (both intake or both exhaust)
  • Install USB boost converter board on shelf if integrated mount
  • Connect fan wires to 12V output terminals
  • Place shelf assembly on top of battery compartment

Power Connections

  • Connect battery USB output to boost converter input
  • Verify 12V output to fans
  • Test fan operation before proceeding
  • Route Edge Hub power cable through designated channel

Edge Hub Installation

  • Apply rubber tape/foam gasket around Edge Hub perimeter
  • Apply additional gasket material at rear cable output area
  • Carefully seat Edge Hub on top of fan shelf
  • Ensure Edge Hub sits level and gaskets create good seal
  • Connect power and data cables

Final Closure

  • Verify all cable routing is clear of moving parts
  • Check that gaskets are properly positioned
  • Close lid ensuring proper alignment
  • Secure lid (snap-fit or screws as designed)
  • Power on and verify fan operation and Edge Hub startup

Post-Assembly Checks

  • Confirm airflow direction and adequate ventilation
  • Verify all connections are secure
  • Monitor initial operating temperature
  • Test battery backup by disconnecting main power

Configuration Tips

  • Airflow Direction: Configure both fans as intake
  • Gasket Sealing: Ensure rubber tape creates good seal to direct airflow over heatsinks
  • Battery Selection: Choose battery pack with pass-through charging for continuous operation
  • Fan Speed: Consider adding inline resistors if fans are too loud for office environments
  • Filtration: Add dust filters to intake fan in dusty environments

Power Wiring Notes

The USB power board transfers 12V from the battery pack to 12V for the fans. Users can choose their preferred wiring method:

  • Direct soldering for permanent installation
  • Terminal blocks for easy reconfiguration
  • JST connectors for modular setup

Maintenance

  • Clean fan filters monthly in dusty environments
  • Check rubber gasket seal integrity quarterly
  • Monitor battery health and replace as needed
  • Verify fan operation during routine checks
