A small forehead mount for under-the-visor POV mainly for portrait capture. With the right angle, it helps to convey the steepness as close as perceived by the rider.
Disclaimer: As with every mount/design, this mount may expose your expensive camera to damage, due to 3D printing part failure, unforeseen design issues, a crash, and the list goes on. Use it at your own risk.
Standard GoPro 3-prong system, but have only tested it with a DJI Osmo Action 4.
Required hardware:
- DJI/GoPro mount thumbscrew (or just a long enough M5 bolt)
- M5 nut
- 1x 4mm wide zip-tie
- Some sort of padding (inner tube, or any other foam/rubber pad of up to 1.4mm thickness)
- The most stable method is a thick, strong double sided taped that also fixes the mount on the helmet (besides the zip-tie)
- If used with normal padding, just any double-sided thin tape would help align the parts.
Details:
- I used PETG. It should also be fine with PCTG, PCCF or similar. Haven't tested PLA.
- Gravity will work against this mount at harsh landings (drops, jumps etc), as such, the bolt needs to be tightened at around 2.5-3 Nm. To avoid braking at areas of high risk (e.g. nut corners at layer line interfaces), I did the following:
- Printed at slightly higher temp (+5 deg) with much less to no cooling, and relatively slow speed profile. Basically improve layer adhesion.
- The nut pocket has 0.1mm tolerance, do not force the nut in, instead, attach the nut to a bolt, heat it up and gently press it flat to the pocket.
- My “finger-tight” with the DJI thumb screw, without excessive force was about 1.5 Nm (measured with a commercial torque-wrench). To easier apply the required force for a stable joint I made this small DJI thumbscrew tool. There are similar options online for GoPro thumbscrews.
- I also applied a modest fuzzy skin (thickness:0.1, distance:0.3), as a way to increase friction between the sliding faces. You can limit your fuzzy skin to these areas only, in the photos it is applied everywhere due to personal aesthetics.
- Pass the zip-tie under the Velcro padding inside the helmet, to avoid contact with the forehead, and tighten.
- During the test rides the footage was super stable. If applied without a double-sided tape onto the helmet, some small rotation and slip can be introduced by hand, but that was not observed during my footage.
