This mod slightly increases cooling capabilities of the amplifier. It does not replace any of the original parts.

I’ve occasionally driven my amplifier into protection mode when playing at very high volume levels with low-impedance speakers (down to 3 Ω) at full range. This usually happens during longer listening sessions, as the amplifier tends to get extremely hot — even when it’s placed openly on a table. The actual error code shown is ASO, which indicates either a short circuit between the speaker terminals or that speakers with an impedance outside the rated range were connected, rather than pointing to a purely temperature-related issue.

A more powerful amplifier would be nice to have, but since I don’t listen at such loud levels very often, it hasn’t felt worth upgrading yet. It’s possible that the ASO protection also relates to the temperature of the heat sink, since the protection doesn’t trigger when the amplifier is only moderately warm. These extension feet seem to help reduce temperature and provide a bit more thermal headroom while slightly lowering the fan noise.

You can attach 3M bumpers (3M SJ5012) to the bottom of the feet:

These feet shouldn’t scratch the original AVR surface once fully inserted, as the engagement is made from the lower section of the part. The model was created in Fusion 360 and was designed independently, though similar concepts exist under Public Domain licenses on Printables.

Printed with PLA-CF, using a 0.4 mm nozzle and 0.2 mm layer height. The bottom of the amplifier doesn’t get hot, so PLA is sufficient for this application.

Additional thermal-management consideration:
If the AVR is used primarily for 2-channel stereo listening, its 7.1 Bi-Amp capability can be used to distribute the thermal load between the physically separate 5-channel and 4-channel amplifier modules and their heatsinks. See the PDF document in the “Other files” section for details. This is not intended to provide any improvement in sound quality; the potential benefit is purely thermal. Once 7.1 Bi-Amp is enabled on the AVR, the configuration is transparent during normal operation and does not interfere with Audyssey calibration.
