This is a simple DIY electromagnetic project inspired by Tom Stanton’s experiments. The design focuses on creating an easy-to-build iron core inductor using accessible materials and basic tools.
For the core, I used a 6mm x 22mm steel rod as the base, which provides a solid and effective magnetic core. The winding is done with 22 AWG enameled copper wire, allowing for a compact coil with good conductivity and durability. To make the winding process faster and cleaner, I used a power drill as shown in the build photos, which keeps the turns tight and evenly spaced.
This project is great for:
Experimenting with basic electromagnetism
Building custom inductors for electronics projects
Educational demonstrations in physics or engineering
DIY magnetics and coil winding practice
Hobbyist projects like solenoids, small transformers, or electromagnets
The design is deliberately simple so that anyone can replicate it with minimal tools and materials. It’s also a great starting point for extending into more advanced builds, such as larger inductors, coil guns, or other electromagnetic experiments.
