Assembly of case:

As with the original model, i used M3x16 screws, which are slightly too big for Raspberry Pi (which uses M2.5). For a one-off project like this, I just drilled the holes on the Pi up to 3mm.

Assembly of display:

The display is a regular 0.91" 128x32 I2C OLED (SSD1306), without any headers attached. I used a piece of two-sided perfboard (cut down to 3x8 holes) and mounted to to pins 2,3,5,6 of the Pi and the display using pin headers which are then cut down as flush as possible. Make sure to use insulating tape (e.g. Kapton tape) and not short out the pins on the microSD card holder. The display floats about 2mm above the SoC. I will report if I experience any thermal problems.

Activation of display in software:

See https://github.com/pikvm/pikvm/issues/797:

  1. Add i2c-dev into /etc/modules-load.d/kvmd-extra.conf file (or create it)
  2. Add dtparam=i2c_arm=on into /boot/config.txt file
  3. Enable kvmd-oled services using systemctl enable --now kvmd-oled kvmd-oled-reboot kvmd-oled-shutdown (N.B.: Ignore any warnings you get at this step)
  4. reboot

Honorable mentions:

The idea was mainly inspired by https://www.printables.com/model/732349-pikvm-diy-v2-pi-zero-2-w-with-oled, however I could not find the display & HDMI-CSI-adapter used there for sale. Also, I like the smaller form factor of the present model.
