Important:

For joining standard filaments is suitable super bond glue LOCTITE Universal, as it loses its strength when heated above 100°C, softens about 150°C and degrades completely at 210°C, so there is no risk of nozzle blockage or contamination when extruding the joined filament.

Joining procedure:
  • First, push the filaments through the aid to stick out 3-5 mm and tighten them using the gray nuts, making sure to orient them correctly to the right (Fig.1).
  • Cut off the excess end of both filaments (Fig.2) and sand the ends with  sandpaper approx. 180-grit (Fig.3) until they are flush with the bottom of the aid (Fig.4). Then remove and clean them thoroughly.
  • Second, insert the filaments into the aid against each other, so that the sanded flats perfectly touch and tighten them using the red nuts (Fig.5).
  • Use a sliding caliper to check the diameter of the joint (Fig.6) and adjust the insertion/tilt of the filaments if necessary.
  • Third, apply a small drop of glue to one filament, quickly press the lever with the other filament, and secure it with the red lock (Figs. 7, 8).
  • Wait min. 3 minutes.
  • Loosen the red nuts sufficiently, pull the filament until the joint slides out of the aid by a few cm and then remove the filament through the cutouts (Fig.9). Be careful not to break the joint, as it is much stronger under tension than under bend.
  • Finally, clean the joint of excess glue using a fine sandpaper (approx.320-grit).
Final notes:
  • I glued PLA and PETG filaments dia. 1.75 and 2.85 and ABS filaments 1.75 mm with LOCTITE Universal. I tested all glued 1.75 mm filaments in a Prusa MK4S only with a 0.4 nozzle without any problems. I didn’t have a printer to test the glued 2.85 mm filaments on.
  • Print settings for all parts: PLA; nozzle 0,4; layer height 0,1; infill concentric 100%; 5 perimeters; seam position aligned.
