Customizable Nametag
All (ok, some of) the flexibility of traditional nametags with none of the inconvenience. Useful if you find yourself wanting to use different names, pronouns, titles, etc. at different times/places. The OpenSCAD file (.scad) is provided for full customization, but you can also just print the stl files with minimal changes (just adding your own desired text/images).
This nametag has 6 slots, which is enough to fit 3 big pieces (taking up 2 slots each), 6 small pieces, or some other combination.
Materials needed:
- Rectangular magnets for the front and back plates. I used a 6x3x1.5mm magnet (4 on top, 4 on bottom, for a total of 16 across both plates) from https://www.amazon.com/dp/B096NVHK8K/ref=dp_iou_view_item?ie=UTF8&th=1
- Cube magnets for the front plate and the inside pieces to connect to each other. I used a 5mm cube (16 for the plate, plus 4 for each big piece (takes up 2 slots) and 2 for each small piece) from https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CW9GVTX2?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_2&th=1
If you are using different size magnets you can customize in the .scad file - I recommend printing a test piece to ensure you've got your magnet holes the right size.
Files overview:
- Nametag.scad: the design file, to be opened in OpenSCAD or other compatible program. Use this if you want to customize anything (e.g., changing the text, making pieces that take up more than 2 slots).
- front_plate.stl and back_plate.stl: the front and back parts of the nametag. You should be able to print these as-is if you are using the same size magnets as me. The front plate is the one that has small magnets to attach the pieces.
- big_piece.stl and small_piece: blank pieces that fit inside to display whatever text/images you want. Perfect for importing into your program of choice (e.g., Tinkercad) to add your preferred designs.
- Name.stl and pronouns.stl: example pieces with text already on them. This is what you can expect results to look like if you prefer to add your text using the .scad file.
Printing instructions:
Settings:
- 0.2mm layer height
- No supports
- I used 15% infill and gyroid pattern, other settings might work too but if you increase the infill the nametag will get heavier which is not ideal as the magnets already add a fair bit of weight.
- Do not use your printing software's “split to objects” - it will mess up the magnet holes.
- Add a pause right before the magnet holes are closed up. This will be 3 layers before the top for the front and back plates. This allows you to print the magnets in place.
- If your printer supports color changing, you may want to change color for the extruded text to make it stand out more
Tips
- Try printing the test pieces to check the magnet hole sizes, especially if you are using different magnet sizes than me.
- Pass the magnets near the parts of the printer that will get close to them, to double check the magnets won't get stuck to the nozzle or otherwise cause problems.
- Mark your magnets! If you print them in the wrong orientation, you will have to print again and you might have wasted a magnet if you can't get it out.
- The more you can print at once, the fewer times you'll have to pause to add magnets (since the pause is at the same layer for all pieces).
