Overview
Dovetail Shaper Plates are interlocking flat plates with embedded Shaper dominoes, designed for use with the Shaper Origin. They can be used to set up custom jigs and workspaces for cutting smaller parts without the need for Shaper tape.
The design is fully parameterized and custom sizes can be generated using OpenSCAD. Details are available on my GitHub.
They are designed to be printed face-down on the build plate using multi-color printing. If you don't have an AMS or MMU, they can still be printed using manual filament swaps.
The Grid
The domino plates align to a grid, with each cell measuring 34.57mm tall by 45.5mm wide.
I have provided plates with grid dimensions 2x2, 2x4, 4x2, and 6x4. However, plates with other grid dimensions can be generated parametrically using the scripts available on my GitHub.
| Rows x Columns | Width x Height (mm) | Width x Height (in) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 x 2 | 98.94 x 77.07 | 3.90 x 3.03 |
| 2 x 4 | 98.94 x 146.20 | 3.90 x 5.76 |
| 4 x 2 | 189.94 x 77.07 | 7.48 x 3.03 |
| 6 x 4 | 280.94 x 77.07 | 11.06 x 5.76 |
Printing
Importing
The plates are designed for multi-color printing. Each plate is split into 2 stl files, the "dovetails" and the “dominos”. To import a file for printing, setup PrusaSlicer with a multi-material capable printer profile, then import both stl files at once. You will be prompted to import the files as a single object having multiple parts. For more details, refer to this PrusaSlicer help article.
Settings
I printed my plates in PLA, specifically Overture Black and White Matte PLA.
To minimize filament swaps, make sure to set the “dovetails” file to Extruder 1 and the “dominos” file to Extruder 2. Start the print with white filament.
Print at 0.2mm layer height, with “External Perimeters First” enabled.
Bed adhesion is critical due to the fine detail required in the first layer. I had the best results using my smooth PEI plate, freshly washed with Dawn Powerwash and water before every print.
Multi-Color Printing with Manual Filament Swaps
I own a Prusa MK4S, but I do not own an MMU. So I printed my plates using manual filament swaps, where the printer pauses between colors and prompts me to change filaments. The dominos are designed to only be 2 layers thick, so each plate only requires 2 manual filament swaps.
For those interested, I have included a .3mf file with my customized printer profile enabling manual filament swaps on my MK4S. Note that in my setup, instead of a wipe tower I just have the printer always purge in the same location on the build plate. When swapping filaments, always make sure to remove the purge from the previous filament swap.
