How to use

  • Measure the real distance using a caliper, from the base to the desired length 120mm or 70mm since this is what you will use for your calculations. For example my printer produces 119.6mm on the real world. So if you extrude 100mm you should see 119.6 - 100 = 19.6 mm from the nozzle to the base.
  • Press the tool against the extruder body try to align it perpendicular to it, then using a sharpie mark the filament on either 120mm or 70mm . Then extrude either 100mm or 50mm depending on the distance you chose.
  • Using a caliper measure the distance between the body of the extruder and the mark. You should aim to get it as close to tool_real_measured_value - amount_extruded as possible, again in my case 19.6mm.
  • Then use one of the formulas bellow to calculate your new value.

New value formulas

Klipper
  • Find the [extruder] section in your printer.cfg. Note your current rotation_distance.
  • Calculate your new rotation_distance using this formula:
    • <new_rotation_distance> = <previous_rotation_distance> * ( <actual_extrude_distance> / 100 )
  • Temporarily set your new value with SET_EXTRUDER_ROTATION_DISTANCE.
    • Example: SET_EXTRUDER_ROTATION_DISTANCE EXTRUDER=extruder DISTANCE=34.99312407591
Marlin
  • Run M503. In the output, find the M92 line and note your current E value.
  • Calculate your new e-steps using this formula:
    • <new_e-steps> = <current_e-steps> * ( 100 / <actual_extrude_distance> )
  • Temporarily set your new e-steps with M92.
    • Example: M92 E421.
RepRapFirmware
  • Run M92. In the output, note the E value. (It will look similar to the screenshot for Marlin above)
  • Calculate your new e-steps using this formula:
    • <new_e-steps> = <current_e-steps> * ( 100 / <actual_extrude_distance> )
  • Temporarily set your new e-steps with M92.
    • Example: M92 E421.

Notes

  • 20mm mark is there for visual reference, if its past the mark you are over extruding, if its behind the mark you are under extruding.

Print settings

  • No supports needed
  • 30% infill
  • Any material should do, use your more accurate one.
