Get the marble to the end of the maze and back out again. There are 3 sliding plates that must slide back and forth to allow the marble to get through.

Print Instructions

Print each of the 3 sliding maze plates. I recommend printing them in different colors so it is easier to distinguish the plates when solving. No supports required, although the middle piece will need bridging for the tracks - it's a short distance to bridge so shouldn't be too much trouble.

You  need a 16 mm (5/8 inch) ball. I designed this to fit a standard marble, so if you have one of those lying around, that should work just fine.

Assembly

Slide the 3 tracks together using the grooved tracks. Each plate has a small notch - those notches should be lined up when putting it together - this helps make sure the plates are oriented in the correct direction. Square up all the plates, and drop the marble in the large square cut-out. You are ready to solve. Good luck!

Finishing the Maze

You have solved the maze when the marble is in the window in the upper right corner of the maze. All plates should be lined back up, just like it was at the beginning.

Theory

This puzzle is an example of an N-ary puzzle. For more information about these types of puzzles, see the wonderful site here.

In a nutshell, each state of this puzzle encodes a number in base 5. There is 1 n-ary digit (or ‘nit’) for each plate, so each state of this puzzle represents a 3-nit 5-ary number: 000 through 444. As you add plates, the number of moves grows exponentially! But don't despair - it's not as hard as it looks. At any given time, there are only 2 moves, and 1 of those moves takes you back to where you just were. So if you carefully keep track of your moves, and don't go backwards (easier said than done), then you should have success!

Warm-Up Puzzle

Just like you can add plates to make the solution longer, you can remove plates to make it shorter. To get a feel for the puzzle, you can just try using the bottom 2 plates and attempt to get the marble through. Of course, there is no cover so you can easily cheat, but what fun is that!
