After trying luma's spool holder I loved it until even though printed in ABS it ended up bending under the weight of a full 1kg of abs that as requiring drying. As a result I realised the walls were JUST not stron enough to handle the job reliably under the stress of heat and weight.
Also trying to fill 2mm desiccant beads through an M5 nut opening IS NOT FRIENDLY , and it's WORSE trying to get them out to replaec when they need recharging.
But GratKit has released 2 new spool holders one for spools with a 75mm core and one for spools with a 58mm core ( these make the holders 52mm and 34mm respectively )
With a bit of Tinkering in TinkerCad this is the result.
I have also found that OBJ exports from tinkercad are MUCH more manifold than STL exports when you do any kind of Boolean Subtraction ( basically like adding a negative volume part to a model ).
As such I recommend the OBJs. I've included both STLs and OBJs though, as well as a 3mf that has all the parts arranged in a suitable printing orientation ( only support MAYBE might be bottom of the spool main body where the 1st part of the threads start. it just depends on how well your printer is tuned for serious overhang and bridging. If in doubt paint on supports to that bit only )
The All Parts OBJ you can split safely into objects to remove or reorient as you see fit.
I can't stress this enough USE ABS OR ASA or higher ONLY
If you print these in PETG I suspect the small one will bend under the weight of a full spool possibly during drying. the larger may actually hold up though.
The end caps are mirrored as such one you will be able to thread in using the bolt and an allen key and as such leave it as non removable. the Right hand one will come out if you use the key as if to tighten the bolt this is to make it easier to refill the core with fresh rechargable desiccant as required by your environment and use.
Mine are printed with ASA Matte Black ( very old spool so If you can still find Tiztec ASA that's what I used )
Printing parameters: Same as any Voron parts,
5 top, 5 bottom, 4 or 5 walls, 40% Grid or gyroid infill.
You should stay with this as I've tested these with them being printed using THESE settings only and they retained both their shape and strength under a Full spool at 70c drying for 24hours.
Your choice if you decide to change it.
IF you struggle with the main body parts ( the spool holder core ) you could print them at an angle of 30 to 40 degrees but you at this point will need support to build plate only but it may improve the threads for you. If you print then flat this may also do well but your printer MUST be tuned to near perfection for overhangs
Hardware required:
2x 608 or 608zz skate bearings
2x M5 25mm BHCS or SHCS bolts ( Button head or Countersink Bolts )
2x M5 Nuts ( recommended though using Nylock nuts if you have some )
I still give kudos to Luma for the original design idea which took my original spool holder idea having desiccant in it's core to the next level.
But this just elevevates and builds on the shoulders of the giants by combining the benefits of BOTH while giving Luma's bearing and holders a boost in strength.
If you have any ideas that you think I should do to these to take them to a next step or even adapt them you your needs, feel free to comment and I'll see what I can do.
