Wanted something robust, so I dove into FreeCAD in a serious way for the first time.  Still struggling with it, but here's the result.

The magnetic return is adjustable, as is the back height and the “striking” bit.  I measured the return force with a kitchen scale and I get about 35-40 grams, which seems about right.

Parts for this build:

  • Qty 2 10mm neodymium magnets, just under 2mm thick
  • Qty 2 608z skate bearings
  • Various M4 screws for the adjustments and the “strike plate”.  The strike plate screw needs to be fairly short, or it will stick out the bottom.  These self-tap into the holes.  Locking nuts are optional.
  • A 42-45mm length of 8mm steel rod.  Threaded rod could be used.  It should be a tight fit through the arm, as these are meant to move together, and a snug fit prevents the rod from moving out of place over time.
  • Two lengths of stranded wire, mine were about 1mm diameter with the insulation.  These are fed into the backs of the arm and platform, then the ends stripped to make electric contact with their respective M4 screws.  Care should be taken not the break the fine strands of wires as you drive in the screws.
