Durham Manufacturing makes an array of steel boxes (ref 1) for storing small parts, fasteners, and the like. Many of their models are compartmentalized, but those compartments are typically rather large -- on the order of 70x70mm to 200x70mm. This model is an OpenSCAD program for creating sub-compartments to insert within those, to allow for more storage density of small quantities. These sub-compartments also make the retrieval of small items easier, as the sub-compartment can be lifted and the contents poured out.
This model is specifically-designed to work in Durham compartments that are rounded on two bottom sides ( fore and aft ). It will work with other styles, but will be sub-optimal.
Example .stl files of common sizes are also included, but users will want to measure their compartments to confirm fitment, as Durham makes many different models. Suggest taking the interior measurement of the existing compartment, dividing that number by the desired count of sub-compartments, and subtracting ( 2 x number of inserts ) mm, to allow for clearance.
Usage:
- Measure the compartment that you wish to subdivide.
- Decide how many subdivisions you plan to add.
- Decide if you want to include tabs, for labeling.
- Open durham_insert.scad in OpenSCAD.
- Edit the configuration section to your taste.
- Render the object in OpenSCAD.
- Export the object to .stl format.
- Proceed as with any other print from an .stl file.
