I come from a long line of educators, and my aunt currently teaches in a special education preschool. She recently asked me if 3D printing could be used to replace the laminated visual direction cards in her classroom. My answer was yes. It took some time to design and test everything, but I finally completed the first card in this series. More cards are coming soon, and I will be sharing a full video of the process. My goal is to make sure no child goes without durable and accessible tools for learning.

If you have children or students with different needs, please leave a comment and share what you think of this visual direction card. Community feedback helps me improve future designs and create tools that actually work in real classrooms.

Project Goal: Replace flimsy visual direction cards with a durable three dimensional visual aid that reinforces instructions for completing tasks and supports learners who benefit from clear step by step cues.

Next iteration make it at least 3 colors and change the drawings more.

Material Selection: As a materials engineer I want these cards to be safe in real environments. Kids, teens, and adults sometimes chew or mouth objects. I did a lot of research to find materials that balance durability, safety, and accessibility. PLA appears to be a good food safe option based on available data. I also wanted to offer a flexible version and TPE seems to be a strong candidate for that purpose. If you have experience with food safe filaments or flexible materials I would love to hear your thoughts. I will also post a full video on YouTube soon that walks through my material choices and printing process.
