I have kept my drills in the same OEM indexed cylindrical box for many years. The drills have been sharpened and renewed but the box remained. That was until recently when the innards of the box broke up and some of the drills vanished to the bottom (photo). It seemed the end of an era!
I couldn't find a better box so designed and printed new parts to fit within the original steel sleeve (photo). This has solved my requirements however I thought others might find the box useful so I have also designed a slip-on sleeve which gives the drill sizes in lieu of the steel sleeve.
Reasons I liked the OEM box so much that I replicated its features:
You can't fit the wrong drills in the holes. There is only 0.35mm clearance between drill and hole so it won't allow the next larger size to fit and it's obvious if the next smaller one is fitted.
If the drill shank has burred due to chuck slip, the drill usually won't fit the hole. This highlights that you need to dress off the burr before next use - and you know what happens if you don't.
It's so compact that you can carry it in your pocket to a job.
The drills won't fall out if the lid is on.
I printed the box and cap in PLA and the sleeve in PETG. No support required. I printed the screw cap with Prusa Slicer's “fuzzy skin” to give it a nice grip.
The white sleeve was, for me, just an exercise so I did not attempt to colour the numbers in the print. Perhaps you may wish to?
