SVG to Air Vent Register Generator

Transform any decorative SVG pattern into a custom 3D-printable air vent register with adjustable borders, mounting
frames, and directional airflow fins.

What It Does

This OpenSCAD project lets you create fully customizable vent registers from SVG artwork. Perfect for replacing boring
standard vents with decorative patterns that match your home's style.

Key Features

  • 5 Included Patterns + Custom SVG Support - Pre-configured art deco, floral, geometric, and Celtic designs, or import
    your own
  • Tapered Border Frame - Smooth transition from pattern to wall
  • Mounting Frame - Optional hollow frame for secure installation
  • Support Bars - Crossbeam reinforcement for structural integrity
  • Airflow Fins - Adjustable angled fins to direct air (2-8 fins, 0-90° pitch)
  • Fully Parametric - All dimensions adjustable via OpenSCAD Customizer

What's Included

  • svg_to_vent_register.scad - Main OpenSCAD file with Customizer support
  • crop_svg.py - Python script to prep custom SVG files (crops viewBox to actual bounds)
  • 5 pre-cropped SVG patterns ready to use
  • examples/ - Additional sample patterns and photos of printed registers

How to Use

Quick Start (Using Included Patterns)

  1. Open svg_to_vent_register.scad in OpenSCAD
  2. Open the Customizer panel (Window → Customizer)
  3. Select a pattern from the svg_file dropdown
  4. Adjust vent_width to match your vent opening size
  5. Customize border, frame, and fin settings as desired
  6. Render (F6) and export to STL

Using Your Own SVG

Prep Your SVG:

This outputs your-pattern-cropped-40.1x245.6.svg with dimensions in the filename.

Configure in OpenSCAD:

  • Set svg_file to "custom"
  • Enter your file path in custom_svg_path
  • Set custom_svg_width and custom_svg_height from the cropped filename
  • Adjust vent_width to your vent opening size
  1. Customize & Print: Use the Customizer to adjust all other settings, render (F6), and export to STL.

Print Settings

  • Layer Height: 0.2mm
  • Infill: 20%
  • Orientation: Print face-down for best surface finish on the visible side
  • Supports: May not be needed, but the tapered edges can make bridging difficult
  • Note: Due to length, you may need to split the model in half. If splitting, enable the "Support Bars" option - it
provides a center joint for gluing the halves back together and offers more print orientation options.

Parameters Guide

All adjustable via OpenSCAD Customizer:

  • Panel Dimensions: SVG pattern size and extrusion height
  • Border Settings: Width, taper, and flat section
  • Frame Settings: Enable/disable, height, thickness, offset
  • Support Bars: Toggle, thickness, vertical extent
  • Fins: Enable/disable, count (2-8), direction (X/Y), pitch angle (0-90°), thickness
