Y-Axis Motor Mount (Composite-Optimized Reinforced Bracket)
A high-strength, composite-oriented Y-axis motor mount for theTevo Tornado andCR-10 family. This mount replaces the thin sheet-metal bracket with a rigid, vibration-damped, composite-metal hybrid engineered for modern materials and high-speed motion.
Reinforced hex-cell geometry, directional load paths, and anM4 brass expansion insert provide stable belt-load transfer and long-term dimensional reliability when printed in PA6-CF, PA12-CF, PC-CF, or equivalent composites.
Tested for 15–20+ hours at high speed — results are quieter motion, tighter tracking, and zero degradation.
Frame Fitment
Designed for: Tevo Tornado Gold (2018) Compatible with:
- Creality CR-10
- Tevo Tornado (OG)
Older Tornados shipped withM3 lower rollers. This mount usesM4 roller hardware, so machines with the M3 system must upgrade.
Recommended M4 Roller Bearings: uxcell 4×12×4 mm https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z3D9ZCL
The mount fits the frame regardless — only the roller hardware needs to match.
Motor Fitment
With a Vibration Damper (~5.9 mm thick)
- 77–78 mm NEMA-17 motors fit perfectly
- Longer motors extend outward slightly but remain fully supported
Without a Damper
Add 5.9 mm to supported length. Motors around 83 mm+ fit directly.
Need a variant for a specific motor length? I can generate one.
Required Hardware (McMaster)
- M4 Stainless Standoff: https://www.mcmaster.com/93655A444
- M4 Brass Expansion Insert: https://www.mcmaster.com/94510A320
- 5.6 mm Cobalt Drill Bit (recommended): https://www.mcmaster.com/5058N131
Additional Common Hardware
- 5× M5 × 10 mm socket-head screws
- 5× M5 extrusion nuts (T-slot or V-slot; load from extrusion end)
Installation
- Print Settings
***Layer height:** 0.15 mm ***Material:** PA6-CF, PA12-CF, CF-Nylon, PC-CF ***Brim:** Recommended — the nutsert tab is the warp-prone zone
- Minor twist is acceptable (roller tolerance ~3–5°)
- Nutsert Preparation
1.Ream the cavity with a 5.6 mm drill bit 2.Tap the insert flush with a flat punch 3.Drive an M4 screw fully into the insert to lock the expansion geometry (light brass shaving is normal)
- Bracket Assembly
1.Thread the stainless M4 standoff onto the expanded insert 2.Install the roller
- Factory bolt works on modern Tornado/CR-10 machines
- Older Tornados must convert to M4 hardware (linked above)
- Frame Installation (Correct Method)
Remove therear-left printer leg to expose theopen end of the 2020 rail. Installing from above is miserable — use the rail end.
Slide-In Procedure
1.Pre-load all 5 extrusion nuts into the printed bracket 2. TreatV-slot drop-ins as T-nuts for this install:
- Load from the rail end
- Ensure each nut rotates perpendicular to the slot 3.Slide the entire bracket onto the rail in one motion
- Maintain light pressure against the extrusion and tighten each screw as it aligns
When done correctly, the install takes under two minutes and guarantees every nut seats properly.
- Endstop Alignment
The mount is fully compatible with thestock Y-axis endstop bracket, installed in the same orientation as factory.
The roller positiondoes not inherently shift — the mount occupies the original footprint. However, depending on wire stiffness or routing, youmay choose to nudge the bracket forward a couple millimeters.
Simple procedure:
- Note/mark the original endstop position
- Install the new motor mount
- Reposition the endstop only if wiring tension dictates
- Update firmware soft limits as needed: ***Marlin:** adjust travel bounds ***Klipper:** update position_min / position_max
This maintains accurate homing and prevents mechanical overrun.
Design Overview
Hex-Cell Exoskeleton
Boosts torsional stiffness, breaks up planar stress zones, reduces mass, and reinforces printed structure in all axes.
Reinforced Load Path
Printed tab → Brass Insert → Stainless Standoff → Roller A rigid, creep-resistant mechanical chain capable of holding long-term belt tension without drift.
Vibration + Acoustic Dampening
Paired with a damper or isolation feet, the mount reduces ringing, Y-axis harmonics, and motor noise at speed.
This mount is a structural, composite-optimized upgrade for Tornado/CR-10 printers. Expect:
- Higher rigidity and belt stability
- Zero drift or deformation over time
- Reduced vibration and audible noise
- Smoother, more predictable Y-axis motion
- Drop-in endstop compatibility with no forced alignment changes
If your frame, motor, or roller spec differs from the usual Tornado/CR-10 setup, I can generate a tailored variant.
