Schaffner FN2070-16-06 Inline EMI Filter Enclosure
This is apassively ventilated, honeycomb enclosure designed for theSchaffner FN2070 series inline EMI filters. It is sized specifically around theFN2070-16-06, though other FN2070 variantsmay fit —verify dimensions and bolt pattern before printing.
The enclosure uses atwo-piece design with a modular lid, allowing connector upgrades without reprinting the entire body.
Design Details
***Lid mounting:**
x8 × M4×12 bolts
Recessed nut pockets in the enclosure body for secure fastening ***Filter mounting:**
x4 × M4×12 bolts to the base
Recessed nuts on the underside so the Schaffner is locked down tight ***Ventilation:**
Full honeycomb pattern on all major faces
Two internal riser pads keep the filter lifted fortrue 360° airflow ***Clearance:**
Extra rear clearance for routing an earth conductor to the downstream socket if required
Wiring & Assembly Notes
- Designed aroundtight internal packaging to keep the overall footprint compact
- I crimped spade leads at ~4–6" length, attached them to the connectors first, then tucked the wiring during lid installation
- It’s snug — but everything fits cleanly
- Tested using14 AWG stranded wire throughout
Strong recommendation: Usequality silicone-sheathed stranded wire. The lead exit areas are intentionally tight; cheap insulation or solid core wire will kink and fight you. Silicone wire makes installation painless.
Supported Hardware (current lid version)
This version is designed around the following components:
***Inlet / fused switch:** https://www.mcmaster.com/5428N13/ ***Outlet:** https://www.mcmaster.com/1333N25/ ***Patch cable for downstream 3DP (optional):** https://www.mcmaster.com/71535K63/ ***Downstream device inlet (optional):** https://www.mcmaster.com/1333N53/
Why these parts?
Yes, the inlet costs real money (~$30). That’s because it’sactually UL-listed, mechanically sound, and built for mains duty.
You already spent$70+ on a Schaffner EMI filter — don’t kneecap the entire system with sketchy Amazon “UL-style” junk upstream. The sockets are cheap; the fused switch is where quality matters.
Print Settings
***Walls:** 4+ ***Infill:** 30–40% minimum ***Material:**
- ✅PETG (recommended) — ideal balance of toughness, heat resistance, and dimensional stability
- ❌PLA (avoid) — creep over time is not acceptable here
This is a stout, load-bearing enclosure. Print it like one.
Thermal Performance
Under sustained3D printer load (~850–1000 W peak), I verified enclosure temperatures using athermal imager.
- The enclosure remains only mildly warm to the touch
- Surface temperatures stayedlower than my Meanwell 24 V PSU under similar load conditions
- Heat dissipates evenly through the honeycomb with no localized hotspots observed
Passive ventilation is more than sufficient for this application.
Included Models
All models arepre-oriented correctly for printing.
***Lid** Self explanatory ***Enclosure Body** Standard enclosure body ***Enclosure Body – Bridge Helper Version** Identical geometry, but with temporary bridge skins over nut pocket overhangs
- Improves bridge reliability dramatically
- Simply poke through with a bolt or drill bit before final assembly
Safety Disclaimer (Read This)
This enclosure housesmains voltage hardware.
I am not responsible for what you do with it. Only build this if you:
- Have experience with mains wiringor
- Are willing to learn safely and responsibly
Double-check earth continuity, strain relief, and fastener torque. Electricity does not forgive.
Modifications & Requests
Questions are welcome.
Requests foralternate lid connector layouts are absolutely on the tableif:
- The manufacturer provides CAD modelsor
- You can supply accurate measurements
A STEP filemay be released with sufficient demand — tolerances are fairly tight.
