OnStep Conversion for Vixen Great Polaris DX Mount

For the fantastic OnStep project by Howard Dutton https://onstep.groups.io/g/main

This is an adaptation for a Vixen Great Polaris DX mount from the 1990s.

This is not a beginner project. Solid experience with soldering and crimping cables is required.

All general information about building and configuring an OnStep controller can be found on the official project wiki: https://onstep.groups.io/g/main/wiki/32747

Please note: I do not provide CAD source files, as all parts were modeled directly in TinkerCAD.

Enclosures for OnStep

RA Motor Mount

The RA motor mount consists of the parts “GP DX RA Base” and “GP DX RA Motor”.
These parts are joined using heat-set threaded inserts and M3 countersunk screws.

The assembled mount is attached to the mount body using:

  • one M6×40 bolt

  • one washer

  • one nut inserted into the printed mount

The bolt is inserted from below.

DEC Motor Mount

The DEC motor mount is attached using:

  • one M6×16 bolt

  • one washer

  • one nut inserted into the mount

Motor Mount Covers

The motor mount covers are fastened using M2.5 screws and heat-set threaded inserts embedded in the motor mounts.

Notes on Clearance and Gear Reduction

The positions of the RA and DEC locking levers may need to be adjusted, as the large pulleys pass very close to them.

A relatively large gear reduction was chosen to achieve maximum torque. This may also allow the use of a lower microstepping setting, depending on your configuration.

RA Axis Cover

A cover is provided for the otherwise partially open RA axis. I attached it to the RA worm housing using double-sided adhesive tape.

Optinal Polar Scope Cover

I removed the polar scope, as I do not use it (polar alignment is done via iPolar or SharpCap).
The opening is closed with a cap included among the models.

Required Parts

  • 2 × NEMA 17 stepper motors

  • 2 × GX12 panel-mount connectors

  • M6×40 bolt with nut and washer (Ø 11.5 mm)

  • M6×16 bolt with nut and washer (Ø 11.5 mm)

  • 2 × 60-tooth pulleys and 2 × 12-tooth pulleys (5:1 reduction)

  • 2 × GT2 timing belts, 6 mm wide, 79 teeth (158 mm length)

  • Heat-set threaded inserts: M3 and M2.5

  • M3 countersunk screws

  • M2.5 pan-head screws

3D Printing Recommendations

Material:  PLA or PETG (recommended if the mount is exposed to sunlight)
I personally use PLA because it is stiffer.
Nozzle:   0.4 mm
Perimeters:  3 (Fewer perimeters may cause problems when installing heat-set inserts.)
Infill:  Gyroid, 15 %
Supports:  See images
Printer:  FDM — parts were printed on a Prusa MK4S
