My wife gave me a Mario Kart Carrera Go racetrack for Christmas because we both love to destroy each other in Mario Kart.
The racetrack is pretty nice, but it lacked the Mario Kart lap/time measurement to provide the real experience.
So I built one myself.
To detect the race cars, I attached Hall sensors and magnets under the cars. I glued the sensors to the underside of the racetrack. To make the whole thing work without a permanent cable connection, I installed a battery that I found in an old Elfbar on the street.
For the Hall sensors, I used two Hall sensor breakouts that I had left over from a cheap Arduino sensor kit.
Any Hall sensor with a digital output will work, or simply a reed switch with pull-up.
The Display is mounted with two M3x5 mm screws.
I used a TP4056 Type-C charge controller for the Elfbar battery and a generic slide on/off switch.
Images, code, CAD data, and a simple wiring diagram are included in the zip file.
