A bit of background.
Once upon a time we were gifted a really smart bird feeder from Canada. A slim square tower with 3 stages, two feeding windows each one with a post at each stage, giving six birds simultaneously the opportunity to feed. It was showing two advantages : it was fairly attractive for the birds and there was one single opening on the top to fill the device all at once.
It went through its feeder's life, sun and rain, and aged. I searched for something similar at home, unsuccessfully, and turned towards 3D printing. There have been many steps in the design up to that one I feel mature enough for sharing. The modular design may fit various needs and assembly is tool-less and glueless.
How to build your feeder.
There are several parts. A base ("Socket"), a bottom lid ("Lid"), the feeder itself ("Body"), a food insertion tube cap ("Cap"), a top tank ("Top tank"), a cover ("Cover") and a hood insert ("Hood").
A stack consists in a bottom part (socket or bottom), one or several bodies, an optional to tank and a cover. The different parts in the stack are to be attached together through a twist'n click process: insert and turn clockwise to lock.
The selection of parts in the kit depends on which way you want to install the feeder assembly : it can be placed on a surface or suspended.
You will have first to prepare the desired number of bodies to be stacked. (a) You will clip 3 hood inserts in each body by inserting the hood bottom first in the feeding hole and then pressing the hood top against the body till the clip clicks-in. These hoods are mandatory to keep the food from escaping through the feeding holes. (b) For the lowest body only (including if one body only is used), the cap is required to close the food insertion tube.
One - why not several- top tank(s) may be stacked upon the top body to make filling easier and provide an extra capacity of food. It is an option, not a requirement.
When suspended the cover with a hole shall be used ("Cover WH"), you may insert a string loop into the hole. An optional accessory called a "dog bone" is provided as well, it provides an easy option to manage the loop as can be seen in the pictures provided. The hole in the middle of the dog bone allows to secure the attachment with a wire knot around the dog bone. You may terminate the bottom with either the socket or the lid, or nothing. The socket provides a way to limit the droppings and other rubbish underneath.
The choice of the body version (straight or round perch) is mainly cosmetic. I nevertheless feel that the straight perch is more obvious for the birds when the feeder is suspended.
Suspended feeder minimum parts list : 1 body, 3 hood inserts, 1 cap, 1 cover WH (optional 1 dog bone). You will need one string as well.
Laid feeder minimum parts list : 1 body, 3 hood inserts, 1 cap, 1 cover NH, 1 socket (stability).
When selecting the installation option. (a) Beware of the opportunistic animals (cats, mice, rats). In open areas, suspending the feeder out of their reach could be wiser and I think the cover will provide little grasp to squirrels as well. (b) When using the suspended option, remember that the hanging mass is stressing the inter-layer adhesion on fairly limited surfaces in the locking feature zone. In other terms, avoid big stacks hanging. No such limitation exists when laying the feeder on its base.
Slicing and printing.
Some parts share common subsets which are loaded as separate objects in the amf files. If you want to re-slice one of those and load its amf file in Prusa Slicer, you will be prompted with the message "This file contains several objects.../...should the file be loaded as a single object having multiple parts?". Please click "Yes".
The "Supports" option shall be "For support enforcers only" and the "smart fill" support painting option used to paint the top locking pads where applicable (clicking on top of one will fill the three). No other support should be needed, except for the hoods.
I've chosen PETG for flexibility and outside use, nevertheless, by experience, PLA can be a backup and will already provide a reasonable durability, specially if the feeder stays protected from direct sun.
The files are provided for a 0.6mm nozzle, this helps in getting acceptable printing time. Obviously using a 0.4mm nozzle is possible by re-slicing the objects. I have not checked the result with 0.32mm layers out of the covers, it should be OK except may be for the hood.
Comments about the design.
The food insertion tube (tube inside the body) is needed when stacking several bodies in order to let the food flow down into the bodies below till they fill up to the level where the food obstructs the tube orifice. Obviously, as already stated, the lower body shall have its food tube top opening obstructed with the cap provided.
The holes in the body, socket and lid aim at evacuating the rain water entering the feeder.
The cylindrical profile is a compromise to make assembly, as well as design, easier and to optimize the ratio food contents/plastics material use.
The bottom shape is chosen to minimise the requirement for supports. The infill will not use so much more material than supports and my first attempts with less "sturdy" drawings, requiring supports, were not conclusive as far as printing is concerned. So here we are, less elegant but more predictable printing performances.
Good print and enjoy. I would be happy to see how you fit this kit to your own environment.

Comment assembler votre mangeoire.
