On the surface, I know that a Poké Ball-inspired box is nothing new, but when a friend asked me for a locking gift box (of a certain size) that looked like a Poké Ball, I couldn't find anything that quite fit the bill. So I decided to model my own version.

While not a true remix, I was inspired by JamesThePrinter's mechanically locking container as well as storage cabinets with double slider crank locks. I needed a solution that would allow the locking pins to be positioned off-axis from the pivot, and this approach worked out quite nicely.

Tolerances are fairly tight on this design, so I’ve included a small test piece for the outer box components.

The print is done in several parts; multi-color printing is not required. Most pieces snap into place, but a small amount of glue may be needed to attach the inner shell to the bottom part of the box to ensure nothing comes apart when trying to open the box.

PLA or PETG work well for this. I recommend avoiding matte-finish filaments for the inner box or any of the locking components, as they may introduce too much friction.

0.2mm layer height, 2 wall loops, 15% cubic infill, supports are needed for the inner box. Make sure to print two locking pins and two locking arms.

When assembled, the inside dimensions are: 138 mm W x 115mm D x 110 mm H

Assembly instructions included.

Note: I've listed this as a non-commercial print because this is based on licensed IP. Prints of this model should never be sold.
