Wii Remote Pencil Sharpener

Problem Statement:

Recent analysis by the Staples finance department has concluded that sales for desktop organization products have declined in recent years.  The company would like to ramp up its profits in this area by enhancing the aesthetic nature of these products.  

Your group has been hired to design a set of theme-based organizational products.  Your team will design a set of office supplies that are tied together with a common theme that is clearly seen, in hopes that someone will buy the whole set, not just one item.

Constraints:

• You will be constructing an actual-size model of your product in SolidWorks

• Your items must be interesting to look at and unique - a conversation starter.  An individual walking by would do a double-take to more closely examine the amazingly artistic item you’ve created.

• Your items must contain examples of all of the 4 main Features:  Extrusion, Revolve, Sweep, Loft; they don't have to be present in each model, just amongst the set.

• Your items must take advantage of at least one of the following: Circular Pattern, Linear Pattern, Sketch-Driven Pattern, Mirror; they don't have ot be present in each model, just amongst the set.

• ALL of your items must take advantage of Filleting and maybe Chamfering

• Each piece you design should be 1000cm3 volume equivalent.

  • Each item can be multiple pieces to be assembled for easier printing

  • Maximum length in any direction is limited to 20cm (slightly negotiable, MAYBE 27cm max)

• Should be 3D printable with limited/no supports, (each item can be multiple assemblable pieces to help this)

Assembly:

The assembly is fairly simple; there are only 3 parts: the lid, the pencil shaving chamber, and the pencil sharpener itself.

1. Take the sharpener and place it into the pencil sharpener holder slot on the pencil shaving holder part.

2. Take the lid and push it onto the top of the pencil shaving chamber part.

3. Leave it on your desk and sharpen when necessary.

4. Whenever you need to empty the pencil shavings, take off the lid and empty them into the trash.

Design Process:

To start the project, we reverse-engineered previous models to understand how some of these were made.

Then we wrote down the steps for modeling this in CAD on paper.

Afterwards, we went to CAD and followed the instructions to design the model.

There weren't too many challenges to creating this model; the main portion of it was playing with different dimensions to make it look as realistic as possible, and getting the shell to work and fit in with everything.

One thing that differs from the original Wii remote is that the speaker holes are in a circular shape rather than a rectangular shape.
