The small, analog voltage meter found on the common red autotransformers is almost useless.  Why not upgrade it to a digital display that also shows current, power, and more?  Don't do it because you need to, do it because you can!

This upgrade was designed for the TDGC-2KVA (see note #1 below), but might work for any of the red, round autotransformers of similar size (~170mm ⌀).

It's designed with thick walls (3mm sides, 2mm face) to help it withstand the weight of the autotransformer itself.   Also, it's 5mm deeper than the original to accommodate the depth of the digital display while still being able to use the original mounting bolts.

Printing

I used ABS, but PETG would also be a good choice.  I used a 0.2mm layer height, 30% gyroid infill, with three wall loops and three shell layers, which consumed ~90g of filament.  Print face-down, no supports required.

Components

Besides printing this component, here are the extras you'll need:

  1. DROK 6-in-1 Power Meter

  2. 10A Resettable Breaker (replaces the 5x20mm glass fuse holder, see note #2 below)

  3. 3/8" NPT Cable Gland (better than using the grommet+glue method the manufacturer used for the power cable)

Caveat: the digital display doesn't work below ~35VAC.  Er, well, it does work -- the backlight gets a bit unstable at that point, but all the measurement values appear to be correct.  As you drop further toward ~20VAC, the display becomes so dim that you can't really see it.  So if using your autotransformer at low voltage is important to you, this modification won't serve you well.

Notes

  1. I'm just now realizing that the TDGC-2KVA might be a unicorn -- nearly every one of these red 120VAC autotransformers I'm finding online only output up to 130VAC and have the standard NEMA 5-15R outlet.  But the TDGC-2KVA is unique in that it is capable of boosting the 120VAC input up to 230VAC output, and it has a global outlet to fit various style plugs.

  2. I could not re-use the glass fuse holder, as the manufacturer applied super-glue to the retaining nut, and I ended up destroying it trying to crack the nut loose.  But that's fine, I prefer the resettable circuit breaker anyway (I already had a pile of them).
