This model is a protective shield for environmental sensors, designed to protect them from rain and direct sunlight exposure while allowing proper airflow for accurate measurements.
The shield follows a stacked-cone (multi-plate) design that prevents water ingress while maintaining unrestricted air circulation around the sensor.
I have tested this design for approximately one year in a rainy environment, and it has never allowed water to enter the interior. At the same time, it allows air to pass through freely, ensuring reliable environmental readings.
If printed in a light color (white recommended), the shield does not significantly affect temperature measurements, even under direct sunlight.
Technical Details
Modular Design
This is a fully modular design, composed of:
Top piece
Intermediate section(s) – print as many as needed depending on the required height
Each intermediate section adds 15 mm (1.5 cm) of internal height
Threaded base (two-part system)
One half of the thread is glued to the bottom of the shield
The other half is glued to the mounting surface or structure
Internal Space
Internal cavity: 30 mm diameter cylindrical space
Height: 15 mm per intermediate section added
This allows you to adapt the shield height to different sensor sizes.
Mast Mount Adapter
An additional mounting piece is included to attach the shield to a mast:
Compatible with masts up to 35 mm diameter
Secured using two M3 screws
Printing Recommendations
Print in white or light-colored filament for best thermal performance.
PETG or ASA recommended for outdoor durability.
PLA may work in mild climates but is not ideal for long-term outdoor exposure.
