Being new to geocaching, I haven't hidden one yet, but I had the idea of making a mushroom cache after finding some caches resembling their stems. While searching for a suitable model to remix, I found the base model, which was already similar to what I planned to make. While I thought initially of abandoning the idea, I saw some minor tweaks I could bring to the base model, so that's what I ended up doing.

Please let me know if you used it as a geocache, who knows, I might come to log it ^^. This model can, of course, be used in other settings than geocaching: a small key can fit inside, so it could be used as a backup-key container as well, for example. Or pehaps it can be a safe money cache if used as decoration at home.

I made my changes to this model in fusion360 and provided the source file, this way, you can easily adjust the hole size to your needs.

The model consists of 3 printable parts: the stem, the cap and a small disc to seal the bottom. There is a small hole at the bottom to insert a nail through to be able to spike the mushroom into the ground to help it keep its position. Push the nail fully in and cover the bottom with the small disc, I recommend using a water-resistant glue to lock the disc in place in order to improve the cache's water resistance.

Printing information:

  • All the parts come in the right position for printing.

  • No supports are needed except for a small area of regular supports at the center of the cap.

  • Using a larger brim than usual for the stem is a good idea as it's quite tall and thin.

  • As the cache is going to be in contact with water/humidity, I recommend printing it in a non-porous material like PETG (or ASA).

Note that the cap isn't flat on the printbed like in the base model anymore, it's a better look in my opinion, but it can come out a bit rougher this way. You can always use a bit of sandpaper or a heat gun to improve this.
