I aimed to create a life-sized The Sims Plumbob costume and ended up with a 300 mm tall crystal weighing 180 grams. I tested various light sources, wanting something strong yet affordable that didn't require building electronics. I opted for a standard 5050 LED strip with a remote and Bluetooth control. To achieve even lighting, I designed spacers to mount the strip, allowing me to fit 3 meters of LED strip with all lights facing outward.

I'm not a big fan of wearing things on my head, which led me to search for a harness that would enable me to mount it more comfortably.

I decided to make my own harness that will rest on the upper torso and enable you to sit down. It's quite comfortable and only requires the addition of a belt.

Assembly of the LED core:

  1. You will need the LED rod and 16 pcs of the LED spacer.

  2. Leave 3 lights going out of the bottom of the LED spacer.
Place the next 3 lights in the pockets of the LED spacer.

  3. Fit the next LED spacer on top of the first one, rotated 60 degrees.
You will need to pull the LED strip through.

  4. Stack all 16 LED spacers with lights on top of each other and leave 3 lights at the end.

  5. Now you should have used 3 meters and 54 lights.

  6. There is a top+buttom part to the rod and you need to fiddle a bit to turn the 3 lights upwards and downwards in the bottom and top area to get the lighting right.

Cut a 10 mm slice from the aluminum tube to ensure it fits in the crystal and prevents rotation.

You will need to solder some wire to the LED strip and have it run through the hole in the crystal and inside the aluminium tube.

Remember to put it through the harness before soldering on the connector.
