Japanese-style modular lamp (Andon) — fully 3D printed

A decorative lamp inspired by traditional Japanese Andon lanterns. The design is modular: stack as many middle sections as you want to build the lamp to your preferred height.

Everything is 3D printed except the LED strip and controller. The diffuser screens use thin white PLA walls to softly spread the light while the frame and grid structure are printed in a contrasting color. The screens are glued in place, but the structural parts connect via press fit so the lamp can be dismantled and reconfigured.

LED Tower Assembly

The internal tower holds the LED strip and controller electronics. It has as many middle sections as the external structure. The LED strip wraps around the tower spiraling from bottom to top. A small LED strip controller (such as this one) snap-fits into the clips on the tower base.

Print Instructions

  1. Print in PLA, with 0.2 mm layers and 15% infill. Use white for the screen panels and a contrasting color of your choice for the lamp structure.

  2. The diffusing part of the screens is 2 layers thick, which I find to be a good compromise between robustness, light diffusion and low light absorption. Print the first 2 layers in white and the rest in your structure color.

  3. Print the body frames and the feet upside down, cap and base frames normal.

  4. Glue the screens to the frames. Note that the horizontal beam of the middle section screen goes up.

  5. Glue the feet and tower base to the base frame.

  6. Press-fit the base, body and cap frames. The tower sections also stack inside the structure.
