- UPDATE -
It seems there is quite a lot of variance on the strength of the magnets that come with the Aqara sensors. I've tested with 5-6 sensors with no issues, but some folks have not had much luck!
I've added a high sensitivity and low sensitivity alternate body version. These change the spacing between the sensor and the magnet to increase or decrease 'sensitivity'.
This 3D printed smart hook uses a disassembled Aqara T1 door/window sensor and a spring-loaded mechanism to detect weight on the hook. When something is hung on it, the hook slides down, moving the magnet away from the reed switch — registering as "open" in Home Assistant (or any Zigbee hub). When it's empty, the springs return the hook to its resting position, registering as "closed."
It was designed to solve a very specific (and very domestic) problem — forgetting to hang a towel back up after a shower — but the applications are pretty much endless. Key hooks, kids' backpacks, dressing gowns, dog leads... anything you'd want your smart home to know about.
The design is loosely based on standard command hook proportions, mounts the same way (double-sided tape or screws)
Since shooting there has been a minor update to the design since shooting the video to help stop objects getting pinched in the mechanism.
Printing Instructions
Material: PLA is fine. PETG too!
Layer height: 0.2mm recommended
Infill: 20–30% — nothing structural needs to be heavy
Supports: Not required
Perimeters/Walls: 2 walls should work fine
Print all parts at standard settings. No exotic filament needed.
Orientation should be self explanatory, the hook prints on the angled bottom face.
Required Hardware
Item | Qty |
|---|---|
Aqara T1 Door/Window Sensor | 1 |
M3 x 6mm countersunk screw | 1 |
M3 x 10mm countersunk screw | 2 |
5.5 x 38mm spring | 1–2 |
Note: The design supports one or two springs, and you can use anything up to 40mm long. 5mm springs may be easier to find.
Mounting uses double-sided tape or a command strip (not included), or you can drive screws directly into the wall/door.
🎬 Assembly Tutorial
The full step-by-step assembly tutorial is embedded below — it covers dismantling the Aqara T1, installing the magnet and springs into the slider block, securing the PCB, and mounting the finished hook.
