I designed a custom 3D‑printed enclosure to house the Icom external keypad project from ON5IA, golb.be, creating a clean, durable, and radio‑shack‑ready finish for the build. The case is dimensioned precisely around the PCB and switch matrix, with internal standoffs that align to the board’s mounting holes so the keypad sits securely without flex or rattle.
The enclosure follows a low‑profile, functional aesthetic:
A two‑part shell (base + screw‑fit lid) that makes assembly straightforward and maintenance painless.
Recessed key wells that frame the tactile switches neatly and give the keypad a purposeful, finished look.
Print‑friendly geometry, with chamfers, fillets, and overhang‑safe angles so the enclosure comes off the printer cleanly without supports.
A stable footprint, ensuring the keypad stays put on the desk during operation.
The result is a compact, robust enclosure that turns the bare keypad PCB into a practical, everyday accessory for Icom transceivers - something that feels like it belongs next to the radio rather than a temporary prototype. It’s engineered for repeatable printing, easy assembly, and long‑term use.
