Nautilus shell chalice : Wunderkammer

Historical Context & Details

  • The Original Piece: Created around 1550–1580, it is a masterpiece of "globalization" in the Renaissance. The shell itself was harvested in the South China Sea and engraved in Guangzhou, China, with images of dragons among clouds. It then traveled to Europe, where an Italian or South German goldsmith added the silver-gilt mounts.

  • The Sea Monster (Dragon Head): The "figurehead" you see at the back of the shell is a sea monster with gaping jaws and fierce teeth. In the original, this metalwork was designed to make the nautilus appear as though it were the body of a marine beast.

  • The Figure on Top: The small figure standing atop the monster is Infant Hercules. In the original, he is shown strangling a serpent (symbolizing his triumph over monstrous forces), though in some 3D renders or restorations, he may appear to hold a spear or have empty hands.
