The Idea

When I was a kid my parents, siblings and I would take chicken eggs, poke one small hole at the top and bottom and then blow the inside out of the eggshell. (My mom would usually bake something with the eggs after). What we'd get would be empty eggshells - perfect for making decorations out of. I'm sure many of you have similar childhood memories :)

The issue is that these shells are pretty fragile. If one of them slips out of your hand, its probably broken as soon as it hits the ground. That's why I decided to design a PLA alternative.

The eggs I printed and photographed have been painted with acrylic paint and then sprayed with a clear varnish.

Versions

There are a few versions of my artificial eggshells:

  • Version 0: This is just the empty eggshell. You can use it as is as a single-color decorative egg, or paint it with maximum creativity.

  • Version 1: This has semi-random elliptic forms on it.

  • Version 2: This is an egg with zig-zagging lines. It somewhat looks like a car tire imprint, though, which was not my intention...

  • Version 3: This egg has a spiraling line wrapped around it and is perfect for two-color painting.

  • Version 4: This has vertical lines. You can use two or multiple colors to get a pattern of your liking.

  • Version 5: Here we have three flower shapes on the egg's surface.

I might add other versions later and am open for suggestions :)

Printing

Support ist not needed. However good cooling is advised. While the bottom part of the eggs is flat for better printability, you might need a brim for proper bed adhesion.

Assembly

The assembly is simple and essentially follows the way you might know from the natural counterpart of this model: You take a toothpick or a match, brake off a small piece and tie string to it. Then you put that inside the egg - and you're done. Just tie it to e.g. a bush or a decorative twig.

Final Thoughts

If you have any improvement ideas or recommendations, I'm open for it. Other than that... Have happy Easter Holidays!
