Mounting solution to attach a Framework 16 laptop to 1010 series aluminum extrusion. Designed to hold the laptop so that the hinge is at the top when closed. All six input modules are accessible when docked. Laptop can also be stored with the screen opened with a loose fit. Four total mounting holes exist below the main docking body, although only two are necessary.
The model was originally designed to attach to two vertical 1010 extrusion pieces that are 10" on center apart from each other (9" from inside to inside). To save material, the model could be sliced to cutout the middle, which would require all four mounting holes to be utilized on vertically orientated extrusion. This would also enable wider (however not thicker) laptops. The two holes on each side have not been tested for use with economy double nuts.
Max Laptop Dimensions
Laptop Width: 14"
Laptop Thickness: 3/4" Note: there is a raised plane inside along the bottom/back wall. This is to take some of the weight distribution from the Framework Laptop feet, and may interfere with other laptops.
Print Experiences
This is my first original model and I am new to 3D printing, so take this all with a grain of salt.
The first print I did was a sliced corner to make sure the dimensions I had were accurate. I printed this with PLA at a 15-20% infill (don't remember exactly). It fit snugly, but I wasn't in love with the design.
The second print I did was full build with PETG with 50% infill. I had gone back and made some small tweaks to the model, and it was just a bit too snug to fit the laptop closed reliably. I also had not removed a lot of the front facing material, and the final result wasn't usable
For the third print, I slightly increased the internal dimensions and cutaway much of the front face to minimize the support required. This is the version current version uploaded, shown in pictures, and what I am using now. I again used PETG with a 50% Gyroid infill.
This took up the the entire diagonal bed of my Prusa XL. For smaller printers, adding a dovetail between the left and right side should be fine.
