Function:

This design will include a food storage compartment on the back that will naturally direct feed into the main compartment, where the chickens will eat. There’s a flap that will cover the main compartment whenever the chickens aren't eating. In order for the flap to open, the chicken must step on the plate on the front of the design. There’s a simple two-bar linkage mechanism on both sides connecting the plate and the flap. As the plate is pressed downm the link pushes the flap up.

Backstory:

Chickens need constant access to food due to their high metabolism and fast digestive systems, which require them to eat frequent small meals throughout the day. Consistent feeding is essential to maintain their energy levels, to support healthy growth, and to promote egg production and their overall health. However, traditional outside feeding methods often result in contamination. Chicken feed can attract and become a food source for rodents and other pests. Not only that, chickens tend to frequently scratch and scatter bedding, and defecate near or inside their food sources.

This issue is particularly common with baby chicks. During the first 6-8 weeks of life, they are typically kept indoors to provide the proper warmth and protection that they need. At this stage, they are prone to contaminating their food and water due to their activity level and lack of spatial awareness. Contaminated food and water increase the risk of disease. As you can imagine, they're far more susceptible to disease due to their small size and immature and weak immune systems.

While many existing feeder designs are intended for outdoor use, this product is specifically designed for indoor chicken brooders. Other designs range from costing $60 to $100 as they are made from metal. This indoor design will be inexpensive and more attainable for the average chicken owner. The overall goal of this design is to minimize food contamination during the early growth stage, supporting the overall health and safety of baby chicks.
