Overview

I can't imagine this will be super useful to anyone, as it was custom-designed for the light fixtures on my ceiling, but wanted to upload it anyways for posterity. A while ago I bought some 800 lumen smart bulbs for my room, not realizing that they were too large for the standard fixtures' enclosures. I designed these shades to mount onto the existing fixtures while providing enough space for the new bulbs.

The shades are printed in several parts, with a top structure mounted to the fixture via the captive screws that normally hold the default enclosure. The perimeter shade is attached to this top structure, and the bottom shade hangs from the perimeter shade via three arms. The bottom shade can also be easily removed/replaced from the whole structure to facilitate easily changing the lightbulb (and to swap out bottom shades with different designs on them in the future).

BoM/Hardware

Each shade requires both printed and non-printed parts. Per shade, you'll need:

  • Printed:

    • 1 mounting ring

    • 1 perimeter shade

    • 1 bottom shade

    • 3 mounting arms

  • Non-Printed:

    • x6 M3 nuts

    • x6 M3x10 screws

Assembly Instructions

  • Print all the pieces required for each shade.

  • Secure the perimeter shade to the mounting ring using 3 M3 nuts in the mounting ring's inserts and 3 M3x10 screws.

  • Attach the 3 mounting arms to the bottom shade, using 3 M3 nuts in the bottom shade's inserts and 3 M3x10 screws.

  • Attach the mounting ring (and perimeter shade) to the fixture using its captive thumbscrews.

  • Slide the bottom shade up into the perimeter shade, bending the mounting arms towards the centre. Guide them into their slots and settle them on the perimeter shade's hooks.

  • Done!

To remove the bottom shade for cleaning or bulb swaps, simply push the mounting arms towards the centre and pull the shade out of the perimeter.

Print Settings

I printed these in PETG due to its slightly higher temperature resistance, but LED bulbs are cool enough and the shades have enough airflow that I've never felt them be more than cool to the touch - PLA would in all likelihood be fine. No special print settings are needed.
