Brainiac, a brilliant Coluan scientist with a 12th-level intellect, was committed to reaching the pinnacle of science at all costs. After Colu was destroyed, Brainiac's mind descended into a vicious obsession with using all available means to preserve and recreate his home world. In order to achieve his ultimate goal of re-creating Colu on Earth in every reality, this obsession drove him to conquer and archive several worlds on his Skull Ship.
After several of these attempts failed, Brainiac invaded Metropolis on Earth-1 and succeeded in capturing and cloning a number of Justice League members. Task Force X was then sent to confront and eliminate them.
