Recently I came across the source model of spool holder, really like the design, but the result lacked sturdiness and strength. I decided to make some modifications to the base and shaft and post them here if anyone is interested.
The .STL files attached are exported for 15mm width of hexagonal walls, 37mm shaft diameter and up to 120mm width spool support. If you'd like to customize this mod to your needs, you can do that in Autodesk Fusion by changing the parameters.
Note about shaft fitment:
37mm shaft fits pretty tightly onto the walls, but that's what I wanted. However, it can be difficult to remove the shaft. If you change the spools often, you might want to decrease the shaft diameter by 1-2 mms to make the fitment more loose.
Other notes:
Supports are mandatory for shaft printing
For shaft I also recommend to make infill 20%+ to ensure enough strength for heavy spools
I recommend to print the base clip on its side, this way the recess size for the wall will be more accurate
