I created this wand for one of my kids to use in their college's rendition of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.
I modeled it in Blender and it has a few cool features:
It's held together with 1/4" x 1/4" x 1/8" neodymium magnets
The blade can be "broken" off, but goes back on with the embedded magnets
During one part of the play, it gets broken but they had many showings of the play, so it needed to go back together again
Has a cavity in the blade for some electronics. I used:
Raspberry pi pico 2w to be the main controller board
9 volt battery
Power converter board
Neopixels to do the colored lighting effects
Limit switch to detect the blade being connected or not
I'll try to post the code that I used if anyone is interested in it.
If you decide to make an electronic version, the only issue we had was the battery getting warm and needed to be replaced at intermission. I haven't been able to work on it anymore to see if I can figure out what was going on with that.
I also had to carve out some material to get everything to fit. I'm hoping to upload updated models with the cavity carved out better. If you want to make an electronic version, let me know and I'll do this sooner rather than later.
Print Settings
In general, I use:
Orca Slicer
If you open the 3MF, use Orca as Prusa Slicer doesn't always load the modifiers from Orca correctly.
0.4mm nozzle
0.2mm layer height
4 perimeters
15%-20% infill
Print orientation can be seen in the 3MF file. The STL files are not oriented!
Auto Tree Supports
I used a lot of support material to make sure there was minimal drooping on bridges
There are some notes for some of the different parts:
ALL BLADE PARTS
I printed these in a clear PLA so the LEDs would show through them better.
If you don't make an electronic version, these can be whatever color you want.
Superglue or epoxy them together
HILT
I printed these in a clear PLA so the LEDs would show through them better.
If you don't make an electronic version, these can be whatever color you want.
Scepter_01_Blade_01
Print it hollow and I used modifiers at the 4 holes on the bottom to not print any top or bottom layers so the LEDs would shine through better
Once printed, cut out the slanted portion as I couldn't figure out a way to get that to be hollow in the slicer and I don't know enough about Blender to make it hollow by design.
Sscepter_01_Blade_02 and 03
Print hollow with no top and bottom solid layers
Handle Front (2 parts)
Print them flat face down and I used a decent amount of supports to get the underside flat, where the electronics would go.
Handle Back (2 parts)
Print them flat face down, NOT standing up, otherwise the spikes at the back will break very easily.
