Threaded Rod Generator (BOSL2 / OpenSCAD)
This is a parametric threaded rod generator designed for reference modeling, not fabrication. If you're building CNC machines, 3D printers, or any mechanical assembly where accurate fastener geometry matters, this gives you properly dimensioned threaded rods you can drop directly into your designs.
Instead of guessing thread profiles or relying on rough placeholders, this script uses the BOSL2 screw library to generate dimensionally correct rods based on real-world specs—specifically matching common sizes available at Home Depot.
🔩 What It Does
Generates fully threaded rods with accurate pitch and diameter
Supports common imperial rod sizes:
#8-32
#10-24
1/4-20
3/8-16
1/2-13
5/8-11
3/4-10
Adjustable length (in inches)
Configurable render quality
Clean, headless rod (pure thread geometry for reference use)
⚙ Parameters
rod_length_inches → total rod length
rod_spec → thread type (diameter + TPI)
$fn → rendering quality (higher = smoother but heavier)
🧠 Why This Exists
When you're designing assemblies, especially parametric ones, you need accurate references for:
Clearances
Nut/bolt fit
Thread engagement
Spatial constraints
This tool gives you that without manually modeling threads or importing questionable STLs.
📦 Requirements
You must install the BOSL2 library:
Installation (quick version):
Download or clone the BOSL2 repo
Drop the
BOSL2folder into your OpenSCAD libraries directory:Windows:
Documents/OpenSCAD/libraries/Mac/Linux:
~/Documents/OpenSCAD/libraries/
Restart OpenSCAD
🚀 Important: Use OpenSCAD Nightly
Use the latest OpenSCAD nightly build (blue icon) — not the standard release (yellow icon).
The regular release still uses the older rendering engine, which is painfully slow for threaded geometry. The nightly builds include major performance improvements that make this actually usable.
⚠ Notes
This is for visual/reference use, not intended for direct printing of functional threads
High-quality settings can get heavy—adjust
$fnbased on your systemIf performance tanks, you’re probably not using the nightly build
