I wanted to try using a cinch for the drawstring on a pair of casual pants; the drawstring in this case being cloth approximately 1/2" (12/5cm) wide by 3/32" (2.3mm) thick. After experimenting with several different version, I ended up with two versions that worked well :

  • CinchBuckleV02 - this two-piece cinch, printed in PETG (or PLA)  holds very tightly.

  • CinchV05 - this one piece cinch printed in FLEX (TPU) holds moderately tightly. I actually prefer this version for my use as it is easy to tighten, and also relatively easy to intentionally loosen.

Note : The "scale tag" you see in the photos can be found here :

Assembly and Use

The cinch printed in FLEX is one piece and requires no assembly.

The CinchBuckleV02 is assembled using a pair of needle nose plies to hold the Slide piece at an angle so that it fits into the hole in the Buckle piece; then use the pliers to "straighten" the Slide so that it is cross-ways to the Buckle (see photos). As the name implies, the Slide should slide back and forth within the Buckle.

Using the cinch is essentially the same for both versions : Insert one end of the draw-string upwards into the hole on one side of the cinch, over the "bump" in the middle, and downwards through the opposite side. Insert the other end of the drawstring the same way in the opposite direction (see photos). Inserting the drawstring into the two-piece version is very easy as the Slide can be moved to enlarge the hole on either side. Inserting the string into the one-piece version is more difficult; I use the needle-nose pliers to push or pull the end of the string through the cinch.

Print Instructions

CinchV05 - Print in FLEX using the 3mf files provided, otherwise :

  • 0.2mm layer height

  • 7 perimeters

  • 15% rectilinear infill

CinchBuckleV02 - Print in PETG* using the 3mf files provided, otherwise :

  • 0.2mm layer height

  • 10 perimeters

  • no infill

*I used PETG so it would hold up to washing in hot water, but likely PLA would work well also.
