Low-Maintenance DIY Ball Mill Project
(Modified from the original design by Lucasfrit)
I designed this ball mill to serve two primary purposes:
Chemical & Vitamin Processing: Grinding and mixing nutrients for yeast cultivation. By using grinding media, I can break down clumped chemicals into a fine powder.
Metal Polishing: Using the rotation to clean or polish metal components.
Lucasfrit’s original design was simple and budget-friendly, making it the perfect foundation for these custom upgrades. The entire housing and mechanical system are 3D printed to keep the build compact and the electronics well-organized.
Key Features
Integrated 3D Printed Case: A single unit designed to house both the motor and the control electronics.
Grease Service Port: A small access opening allows for direct lubrication of the internal gears, enabling maintenance without disassembling the entire case.
PWM Control: Features a PWM controller to adjust motor speed, allowing you to fine-tune the rotation based on the material being processed.
Material Specifications
PETG (Strength & Durability):
Case: Used for the main housing to ensure structural rigidity.
Gears: Printed in PETG for better durability and temperature resistance during operation (a light coat of grease is recommended).
TPU (Flexibility & Grip):
Base: Provides a flexible foundation that stabilizes the machine and dampens vibrations.
Rings: Custom-fit rings to be installed on the PVC rollers. These provide essential friction and grip for the grinding jar, especially if other anti-slip materials are unavailable.
Components Used
Motor: 1 x Recycled motor (e.g., from an old power drill) or an RS-540 / RS-550 motor.
Bearings: 4 x 608 bearings.
Controller: 1 x PWM 24V 10A (ensure it matches your motor’s specs).
Rollers: 1/2" PVC pipe, cut to your preferred length.
Anti-slip material (optional if using TPU rings).
